Located within the pretty walled city of Famagusta, Church of St. George of the Greeks is a fascinating sight. The remains of what was once a magnficent cathedral has turned into ruins but is not less magnificent in its current state. It is still possible to marvel at the impressive towers and gorgeous architecture. The church is a rare type of Orthodox church and is designed in a Cypriot Gothic style with certain elements built in local Byzantine architecture. The roof and segments of the walls are gone but once the church also had a high rib-vaulted ceiling.

Built in 1360, Church of St. George of the Greeks is believed to have been the seat of Famagusta’s Orthodox bishopric during medieval times. It is still possible to discern high-quality wall paintings in Paleologian style inside the church.
