St. Mamas Monastery

The magnificent St. Mamas monastery in central Güzelyurt is a true beauty both on the outside and inside. Beautifully shaped arches encircle the main building and the roof is decorated with an impressive dome and a stunningly carved tower. When entering the monastery you are met by a goldmine of religious paintings and ornaments. Many people from the south side of Cyprus come here and the images are commonly kissed and honoured. It is also a very popular tourist attraction.

The name and the location of the monastery originates from Mama, said to be a Christian saint who was killed due to his religious beliefs. His coffin, buried at sea, ended up in Cyprus and eventually at this specific spot where the monastery in his name was built. Tickets can be found in the building next to the museum of nature and archaeology.
