Church of St. George of the Latins is one of the oldest churches in Famagusta and also one of the most impressive. The church’s architecture reveals great masonry which suggests that highly educated masons gave life to this beautiful building in the early 1300’s, when the church is believed to have been built. Particularily fascinating are the impressively carved capitals. This is also the site where you can marvel at stunning carved ornaments from the medieval times.

The remains of Church of St. George of the Latins are mostly in ruins with the north and the east walls still standing, however these are enough in order to imagine the greatness that once stood here. The church is believed to have been owned by wealthy Genoese merchants who were very influential in Famagusta already in the 1200’s and is therefore likely a Genoese church. This intriguing historical site is not to be missed when visiting Famagusta.
